Volleyball Athlete Success Series
Lead Coach Howard Vernick
During my 3 decades of coaching volleyball, I have observed thousands of volleyball players competing in matches. I have also analyzed my high school matches point by point. I have concluded that the main cause of losing matches is athlete errors. Many wins are the result of the opponent’s errors, with the attacks of the winning team being secondary.
Bad habits, learned during a player’s career, are the primary cause of errors. Bad habits in technique, bad habits in movement, and bad habits in focus. The Monster Athlete Volleyball Athlete Success Series will enable you to identify your bad habits, replace them with new, effective habits, and become a strong, consistent contributor to your volleyball team.
Our Passing With Precision sessions will help you to focus more completely on the ball, learn how to move to the ball, and how to contact the ball in a way that results in consistently settable passes.
Our Intentional Serving sessions teach consistent serving and jump float techniques that address footwork to the ball, proper toss, and controlling the destination of the ball.
Our Set To Win sessions teach setters proper footwork to the ball in every game situation, proper technique for consistently delivering a hittable ball to the hitters, effective defensive skills, and a variety of second ball attack techniques.
Our “Reps” sessions enable athletes who have completed our foundational sessions to experience 2 hours of repetition to build muscle memory and consistency in their new volleyball skills.

Optimizing the Libero/Setter Relationship Set to Win Skill Development Clinic
The team Libero passes the first ball most of the time. The team setter sets the second ball most of the time. These two athletes must act as a team if the final ball is to be delivered to a hittable location. This clinic trains setters and Liberos how to work together effectively and consistently. Each athlete has very specific responsibilities. These responsibilities are taught and practiced extensively during the clinic. Areas covered include:
- The Libero – Leader of the back court
- The Setter – Team Quarterback
- Athlete deference to the Libero
- The Setter’s Job – Set a hittable ball
- Libero/Setter communication
- 2/3 and 1/3 Rule – Setter/Libero Court Coverage Responsibilities
- Setter Out – When the Libero takes the second ball
- Libero/Setter working effectively on defense to produce a hittable ball
